I am a web developer and use web hosting services. People often complain to me their website is getting slow or not performing well. Most of the time it is a problem with their web hosting, but as people don’t know about it, I like to explain them. Many people get confused about website development and website hosting. Well, both these terms are very different.
Developing a website means, designing and creating a website, whereas, website hosting means, taking a website over the internet.
Web development is done by coders and programmers, whereas, web hosting is looked after by hosting providers.
So, to avoid this confusion, I asked MilesWeb which is the best hosting in India to provide answers to some basic questions that I face frequently from my customers. MilesWeb is my go-to web hosting provider from the last 1 year and it has helped me in many ways, so I thought of bringing guidance from them.

So, let’s get started.
What is Web Hosting?
First of all, we must know what web hosting is, and why it is required?
Web hosting is an arrangement, where a fully developed website is stored (hosted) on a server. The server then provides required hosting resources (like RAM, CPU, bandwidth, etc) to the website. The website uses all these resources and gets display on the ‘world wide web’.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is the name of your website, or blog, just like milesweb.com, or facebook.com.
So, it is always better to choose a domain name that suits your business and most importantly that is easy to remember. Avoid making it more fancy and difficult to understand.
In case you don’t have a domain name that the internet uses your IP address as the name of your website.
What is web hosting types?
Every website is different and thus their requirements are different. So, to fulfill all the needs of a website, web hosting providers have crafted different web hosting types and some of them are used widely which are mentioned below :
(1) Shared hosting –
It is the most basic hosting type in which multiple websites are stored on a single server. Cheap shared hosting is the basic option where all websites on a server using the same resources. It is the best option for a blog and a website with few pages but, is not recommended for eCommerce websites with huge traffic. This is because shared hosting is not able to serve resources to high traffic sites and thus all site gets unequal hosting resources.
(ii) Dedicated hosting –
It is highly preferred by websites having a lot of confidential information. Bank sites that hold customer’s sensitive data like name, address, account number, pin, passwords, etc. require everything sorted. In dedicated hosting, every website gets separate server space, and resources for its use only. There is no sharing of resources like shared hosting. Thus, dedicated hosting is the safest place to host any kind of site.
(iii) VPS hosting –
VPS (Virtual Private Server), as the name says it is a private server like dedicated hosting but it is also a virtual like shared hosting. Thus, is known as a mix of both shared and dedicated hosting, where the website gets dedicated resources but is hosted with other websites. In VPS also, no two websites share the same resources, and thus, people use it to upscale their shared hosting plan, when the website’s demand increases. It is cheaper than dedicated hosting and thus is preferred by a large number of people.
(iv) WordPress hosting –
WordPress is a content management system, that allows its users to create and maintain a website. Big leaders like Disney, Sony, etc are WordPress users and have hosted their site on it. Every website created on WordPress needs to get hosted on WordPress hosting only. MilesWeb has a wide range of WordPress shared hosting and WordPress cloud hosting.
